Types of Grants

The GRF supports six types of grants:

  1. General Fund/Rescue Fund Small Grants
  2. General Fund/Rescue Fund Large Grants
  3. April Fund Grants
  4. Emergency Grants - Natural Disasters
  5. Emergency Grants - Puppy Mill Closures, etc.
  6. Health Research Grants

The Golden Retriever Foundation will expect Rescue programs seeking GRF support to have participated in the National Rescue Committee's (NRC) Annual Survey, to submit a copy of that survey with their grant request or to authorize the GRF to obtain a copy of the submitted survey from the NRC. For new organizations not functioning during the previous survey year, the GRF expects these organizations to be known to the NRC and to be listed on the State listings of Rescue Programs (www.grca-nrc.org) and this will be verified with the NRC.

General Fund/Rescue Fund Small Grants

This type of grant has a cap of $3,000. This is assistance to a nonprofit (or creditable group or individual) that aids the health, rescue, or general well-being of the Golden Retriever. The scope of considered grants is as broad as the objectives and purposes of the Golden Retriever Foundation as stated in the Foundation's by-laws.

The criteria used to analyze these requests are:

  • The proposed project and its relationship to the Foundation's purpose;
  • The project's impact on the applicant's goals and on the Golden Retriever;
  • The group or individual's credibility and reliability;
  • Other financial support for the project.

A short turn around time on this grant is important. GRCA membership affiliation is suggested.

General Fund/Rescue Fund Large Grants

This type of grant has a cap of $15,000. This is assistance to a 501 ( c ) 3 organization that aids the health, rescue or general well-being of the Golden Retriever. The scope of these grants is as broad as the objectives and purposes of the Golden Retriever Foundation as stated in its by-laws. The pre-grant analysis will stress the history, credibility, finances and "best practices" of the requesting organization in addition to the criteria used for the Small Grant reviews. The turn around time on these grants will be longer than the Small Grant.

April Fund

April Fund grants have a cap of $400. It is a subsidiary fund of the Rescue Fund and reimburses extraordinary vet expenses on individual rescued dogs. Any of the following items on file with the GRF or with GRCA's National Rescue Committee (NRC) will satisfy the Foundation's requirements:

  • A copy of the Rescue group's current IRS 990 form;
  • A current, completed Grant Application for Rescue Group
  • Participation in the most current NRC Rescue group survey.

Emergency Grants - Natural Disasters

When unusual events occur which result in a large number of dogs, specifically Golden Retrievers, needing aid and assistance, the GRF's goal will be to provide support. The GRF's financial commitment will be for a specific amount and for a limited duration. The amount of support will depend upon the GRF's financial resources and the particular circumstances of the event. The GRF will provide financial support for canine fixed goods and services such as food, medicine, shelter and search and rescue operations. It will not provide for an individual's personal gain such as wages. There is a cap of $4,000 on this type of grant.

The Foundation would prefer to work through established Golden Retriever clubs and Rescue groups for natural disaster emergency funds. Upon receiving the request either by phone, e-mail or other means, the GRF Board will immediately convene to analyze the request.

The criteria that will be considered are: the degree of need, the credibility of the requesting group and the amount of other financial support.

Emergency Grants - Puppy Mill Closures, etc.

When the GRF was established, it was instructed to provide support for expenses relating to puppy mills. The GRF will provide emergency money to established Rescue groups for expenses incurred in puppy mill closures. Upon receiving the request either by phone, e-mail or other means, the GRF will immediately convene to analyze the request.

The criteria that will be considered are: the degree of need, the requesting group's credibility and the amount of other financial support. At present, there is a $1,000 cap on this type of grant.

Health Research Grants

The GRF will fund health studies that fall within the objectives and purposes of the Golden Retriever Foundation. The criteria used for analysis are: pertinence of the study to the Golden Retriever, peer review recommendation and available money.
